Mount Pleasant youth teams advance to Cal Ripken regionals

Three Mount Pleasant youth baseball teams are headed to the Cal Ripken Southeast Regional championships next week.

The 10U, 11U and 12U Mount Pleasant all-stars each won state championships last week in Aiken to qualify for the regional tournaments. The three Mount Pleasant teams lost just one of 12 games, combining to outscore their opponents 111-34 through the three-day state tournament.

Mount Pleasant opened in the 10U tournament with a 19-0 win over hosting Aiken on Friday. After a narrow 4-3 loss to James Island Saturday morning, the all-stars rebounded with a 13-2 win over North Augusta later that afternoon. In a rematch with James Island in the championship game, Mount Pleasant ran away with an 11-3 win for the state title.

The 11U all-stars defeated Aiken, 11-5, in the opening round Friday. They knocked off West Ashley, 11-4, and North Augusta, 8-6, Saturday before pulling out a 4-3 win over Aiken on Sunday.

The 12U all-stars turned in the weekend’s most dominant performance, winning three of four games by at least 10 runs. The all-stars took a 12-2 win over Aiken Friday. They beat Goose Creek, 7-0, and North Augusta, 15-5, Saturday before shutting out Goose Creek, 11-0, in the state championship game Sunday.

The regional tournaments run July 23-27. The 10U all-stars will play in Matthews, North Carolina, the 11U all-stars in Altamonte Springs, Florida and the 12U in Lewisburg, Tennessee.

Mount Pleasant finished second in the 9U tournament, falling 4-3 in the state championship game to Aiken.
