The Charleston County Parks Department has plenty of great events lined up for August.

Reggae Concert Series: Mystic Vibrations

Friday, Aug. 1, 7:30-11 p.m.

James Island County Park

Now on Friday nights. Relax and enjoy an evening of reggae music performed live in beautiful James Island County Park. Bring a chair or blanket and rock the night away to music by Mystic Vibrations. Food, beverages and souvenirs will be available for purchase. Outside alcohol and coolers are prohibited. Advance tickets will not be sold. Band is subject to change. Gates open at 7:30 p.m.; music begins at 8:30 p.m. Fee: $8; free for Gold Pass Holders and ages 12 and under.


Nickelodeon Character Wednesdays at Charleston County Waterparks

Wednesdays, ongoing through Aug. 13

Some favorite Nickelodeon characters will be making special appearances at the waterparks on Wednesdays this summer. Characters will make appearances between the hours of noon–3:30 p.m. For details, visit www.charlestoncountyparks.com or call 843-795-4386.

Aug. 6: Diego from Nickelodeon’s “Go, Diego, Go!” at Splash Island (located within Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park)

Yappy Hour: Dreamland Band

Thursday, Aug. 7, 4-8 p.m.

James Island County Park dog park

Free event with park admission. Join fellow animal lovers after work at the James Island County Park dog park for live music by Dreamland Band and beverages available for purchase. No pre-registration required!. Simply pay gate admission upon arrival.


Wannamaker Summer Movie Series

Saturday, Aug. 9, movie begins around sunset (approx. 8:15 p.m.)

Wannamaker County Park

Join movie fans for a movie under the stars. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Socialized dogs on a short leash are welcome. No alcohol is permitted. Call 843-795-4386 or visit www.charlestoncountyparks.com for movie title. Movie is free with park admission fee of $1 per person.


Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series: Championship Race

Sunday, Aug. 10, 7 a.m. until noon

James Island County Park

This is the championship race of this 24th annual five-series swim-bike-run event. The race begins with a 600-meter open freshwater swim in the lake at James Island County Park, continues with a 12-mile bike ride through the scenic paved paths of the park and nearby roads, and finishes with a flat 5K run. Fees start at $50 per race. Spectators welcome. Open to ages 12 and up.


Thursday Night Boogie

Thursday, Aug. 14, 6-10 p.m.

Mount Pleasant Pier

Join the parks department for this new event at the Mount Pleasant Pier specifically for the 21-and-up crowd. The pier will be rockin’ with the sounds of DJ Jim Bowers as he plays a variety of line-dancing hits, unforgettable oldies and beach music classics. Beverages and food will be available for purchase. Tickets are limited; advance purchase is recommended. A photo ID is required to gain entry into the event. For ages 21 and up. Fee: $10/$8 CCR Discount/$10 on site (if available).


Big Kahuna Fishing Tournament

Saturday, Aug. 16, 6 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Folly Beach Fishing Pier

Enter the summer’s largest fishing tournament. Prizes will be awarded in: Adult Angler, Lady Angler, Youth Angler (12 and under), Senior Angler (60+), Total Weight of Five Fish and King Mackerel. Tournaments held rain or shine. Pre-registration ends Aug. 14. On-site registration begins at 6 a.m. Prizes awarded at 2:15 p.m. For additional information, call 843-588-3474. Open to ages 3 and up; an adult chaperone is required for ages 15 and under. Fees range from $8-$15.


Shaggin’ on the Cooper with The Coppertones

Saturday, Aug. 16, 7-11 p.m.

Mount Pleasant Pier

Spend an evening dancing on the scenic Mount Pleasant Pier to live music by the The Coppertones. Beverages and food will be available for purchase. Tickets are limited; advance purchase is recommended. A photo ID is required to gain entry. A registered and paid chaperone is required for ages 15 and under. Fee: $10.


Pups, Yups and Food Trucks

Thursday, Aug. 21, 5 – 8 p.m.

Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park

It’s a party in the park with your dog. You and your pup are invited to join park-goers after work for live music performed by Katina Rose, beverages and food from Refueler’s Mobile Café. All dogs must remain on leash. No outside alcohol or coolers permitted. Free event with your regular park gate admission.


Special Needs Prom

Friday, Aug. 22, 6 – 8 p.m.

Bees Landing Recreation Center

People with special needs and their families and friends are invited to a themed prom. Come dressed in your best attire and dance the night away with a live DJ playing your favorite music. Advance purchase is recommended. A registered and paid chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/$4 CCR Discount/$5 on site (if available)


Lowcountry Master Games Track and Field

Saturday, Aug. 23, 7 a.m. to noon

Park West Recreation Complex – Mount Pleasant

Lowcountry Master Games promotes physical/mental well-being and fitness for citizens age 50-plus by encouraging healthy lifestyles and social relationships, participation in sports, recreational activities and athletic competition. Join the parks department for a friendly track-and-field meet on Aug. 23 at the Park West Recreation Complex. Activities will include 100m run, 200m run, 400m run, 800m run, 1,600m run, 3,200m run, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay, 4x400 relay, long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot-put, discus and javelin. All events are open to all fitness levels and ages 50 and up. Fees to participate: $10 per person.

Programs and Camps

The parks department also offers a variety of special programs and camps. A calendar of these events is available through the parks department website. Advance registration required for many programs. Call 843-795-4386 or visit www.charlestoncountyparks.com to register. Many programs require that a minimum number of participants be met. Don’t let a good program get canceled – register in advance.
