Police Blotter – Lottery scam

  • Friday, July 18, 2014

If you get a check in the mail as prize winnings for a lottery that you did not enter to play, it is a scam.

One woman learned that after taking the check to her bank to be cashed, a police report said.

The letter was from International Claims Department (American Trust Inc.) saying she won the “American Mega Sweepstakes Lottery” held in May. The return address was out of London, U.K. The check was issued out of a supposed credit union in Kentucky for $3,935. According to the report, the letter narrative had specific instructions to contact a claim agent before trying to cash it.

The victim decided to call the actual credit union first and learned that this is an ongoing scam and is being investigated on the federal level.
