  • Saturday, July 19, 2014

On Sunday, July 27, join the Charleston Area League of Women Voters (LWV) for the screening of an award-winning film on sex education and meet the woman whose story is told in this film. “The Education of Shelby Knox” will be shown at the Cinebarre, 963 Houston Northcutt Blvd., Mount Pleasant, from 5-7 p.m.

Shelby Knox, who as a teenager became nationally known for her activism on behalf of comprehensive sex education, is the special guest and will speak following the film.

In the years since the film won acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, Ms. Knox has been mentored by Gloria Steinem, testified before Congress and many other civic and legislative groups, and become director of Women's Rights Organizing at Change.org, which is based in New York City.

Tickets should be purchased in advance at www.lwvcharleston.org. Attendees are asked to arrive by 4:30 p.m.

South Carolina has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the United States. Addressing this issue, the Charleston Area League of Women Voters supports comprehensive sex education for teens. With its partners, the American Association of University Women, the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the Charleston County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Council, and the Center for Women, the LWV is working to raise awareness of the importance and availability of medically accurate information about reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases.
