East Cooper Mass Choir awards $7,350 in scholarships

The East Cooper Interdenominational Mass Choir held its annual scholarship competition at Greater Goodwill AME Church.

The choir has awarded more than $190,000 in scholarships since its inception in 1984 on the recommendation of Mrs. Christine Buncum. Scholarships were awarded in the amount of $1,200 for first place, $750 second place, and $500 third place.

First-place winners were: Hale` Alston, a student at Wando High who plans to attend Winthrop University; Sharneisha Joyner, a student at Hanahan High planning to attend the University of South Carolina, Columbia; and Shatori Fell, a student at Lincoln High, who plans to attend the University of South Carolina, Spartanburg.

Second-place winners were: Lovequan Scott, a student at Wando High School, who plans to attend The Citadel; Deona Scott, a student at Hanahan High, who plans to attend North Carolina Central University; and Nida Singleton, a student at Lincoln High, who plans to attend Trident Technical College. Third-place winners were: Helena Jenkins, a student at Wando High, who plans to attend Virginia Commonwealth University; Kiona Yasmine Stafford, a student at Timberland High, who plans to attend Francis Marion University; and Amy Smith, a student at Lincoln High School, who plans to attend Greenville Tech.
