Wando rising senior Ben Jacques committed to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte (UNCC) football's 2015 recruiting class last week.

Jacques, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound tight end, fielded offers from Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Youngstown State, Columbia and Lafayette.

He caught eight passes for 98 yards and a touchdown as a junior last season and helped Wando to the Class AAAA playoffs primarily as a blocking tight end in the Warriors' run-heavy offense. He's rated as a two-star prospect by recruiting site Rivals.com.

Jacques began drawing the interest from the likes of Duke, Wake Forest and Florida State at camps this summer but says now felt like the right time to make his commitment official.

“It's a relief to know where I'm going after high school and to know (2014) won't be my last football season,” he said. “People were committing left and right. It felt like the right time to commit and UNCC was the best fit for me overall.”

Jacques says the excitement surrounding UNCC's new football program attracted him to the team, while the school's pre-med program sold him academically.

“UNCC has a great coaching staff, dedicated fan base and have always shown great interest in me,” Jacques said. “It's in the South, which is a win, and there's a lot of excitement around this program and I'm excited to be a part of it.”

UNCC was the first school to offer Jacques a football scholarship. The Forty-Niners won five games as an independent in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision in their 2013 inaugural season, including wins over Presbyterian and Gardner-Web. UNCC is expected to join Conference USA in 2015.
