Andrew Roberts of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina has recently become recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at the University of Iowa.

Sigma Alpha Lambda is proud to announce that Roberts has recently become recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at the University of Iowa.

U.S. Department of State

Sloan Nietert, a high school student in Mount Pleasant has been awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarship for 2014-2015. Sloan will study Korean in South Korea for the summer.

University of Vermont

Keith Jackson of Mount Pleasant received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree in Statistics within the College of Engineering and Math Sciences during commencement ceremonies on May 18 at the University of Vermont.

Civil Air Patrol

Cadet members of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP)ís Coastal Charleston Composite Squadron, a local unit of CAPís South Carolina Wing, have received the following appointments and admissions for the fall of 2014:

Cadet Airman 1st Class Matthew V. Greco has received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is a student pilot who has already accomplished a solo flight in a fixed-wing, powered aircraft. Cadet Greco is a senior at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant and is also a member of the Wando HS Air Force JROTC.

Cadet Staff Sergeant Robert J. Sparano has received an appointment to the United States Military Academy, West Point. Cadet Sparano is also a senior at Wando High School and a member of the Wando HS Air Force JROTC.

Cadet Major Tyler C. Hoover, the immediate past Cadet Commander of the Coastal Charleston Composite Squadron, has been awarded a Citadel Scholars full four-year academic scholarship to The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. He is also one of only three students in the nation this year to receive a Spaatz Association Aerospace Leadership Scholarship for flight training. He is also a student pilot who has already accomplished a solo flight in a fixed-wing, powered aircraft. Cadet Hoover is a senior at Palmetto Christian Academy.

Cadet Captain Estera L. Leavelle, the Cadet Commander of the Coastal Charleston Composite Squadron, has been admitted to Clemson University and plans to join Clemsonís Air Force ROTC program and major in psychology. Cadet Leavelle is a senior homeschool student.

Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Max H. Maurer, III has been accepted to the United States Marine Corps. Cadet Maurer is the Cadet Deputy Commander of the Coastal Charleston Composite Squadron. He will report to Parris Island, South Carolina for basic training after his upcoming graduation from Summerville High School.

Clemson University

Melanie Catherine Wells of Mount Pleasant graduated from Clemson University May 9 with a Bachelor of Science in Food Science. In addition, Ms. Wells has been named to the Presidentís List at Clemson University for the spring 2014 semester.

Governorís School for Science and Mathematics

Cassidy Baldwin and Jamal Merritt, both from Charleston County, graduated from the South Carolina Governorís School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) on Saturday, May 31, in Hartsville.

Cassidy, daughter of Luanne and Louis Baldwin, plans to attend Clemson University. Jamal, son of Monique and Jimmy Merritt, plans to attend Vanderbilt University in the fall.

Wofford College

Dr. Nayef H. Samhat delivered his first commencement address since becoming Wofford Collegeís president at the 160th Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 18. Degrees were conferred to about 360 graduates. Samhat became president in July 2013 and his inauguration was held April 25 of this year.

Brittany Alexandra Bryan received bachelor of arts degrees in government and economics, cum laude. Bryan is from Mount Pleasant. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Charles and Karen Bryan.

Leslie Hamilton Griffin received a bachelor of arts degree in French with a minor in history, cum laude. Griffin is from Mount Pleasant. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Edwin and Molly Griffin.

Atlee Jennings Lenes received a bachelor of arts degree in accounting, cum laude. Lenes is from Mount Pleasant. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Steven and Elisabeth Lenes.

Robert Harrison Levin received a bachelor of arts degree in religion, cum laude. Levin is from Mount Pleasant. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Gregg and Jennie Levin.

Alexander Crossley Long received a bachelor of arts degree in finance. Long is from Isle of Palms. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Hugh and Lisa Long.

Grace Marie Longanecker received a bachelor of science degree in psychology, magna cum laude. Longanecker is from Mount Pleasant. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Gregg and Tracy Longanecker.

Martha Dabney Sampson received a bachelor of arts degree in business economics. Sampson is from Mount Pleasant. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): James and Martha Sampson.

Ashleigh Marie Van Metre received a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and a bachelor of science degree in biology with a minor in mathematics, concentration in computational science, magna cum laude. Van Metre is from Mount Pleasant. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Christopher and Rosemary Van Metre.

Shelby Hannah Winters received a bachelor of arts degree in business economics. Winters is from Mount Pleasant. Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Timothy and Susan Winters.
