Linhart is the first Lowcountry student to win this honor. PROVIDED

Choral Linhart, a senior basketball player from Charleston Academic Magnet High School (AMHS), has been selected as an AQUAS scholar-athlete. She will be graduating in the spring of 2015 and plans to enter college, where she will be enrolled in a pre-law curriculum in preparation for moving on to get a law degree after graduation.

A nonprofit organization, AQUAS (Assistance for Qualified Undergraduate Athletic Students) identifies underserved high school athletes who have also demonstrated high academic performance.

These students may not have received much national visibility for a number of reasons; consequently, college coaches are not aware of their skills.

AQUAS overcomes that problem as it puts these selected students in front of collegiate athletic departments until the right academic and athletic matches are found.

Linhart is the first Lowcountry-area student to be selected for this program.

Linhart has been the starting point guard for AMHS since her freshman year. She is a first team all-state and all-region performer and the school's MVP and team captain.

Last year, she averaged 16 points, five assists and five steals per game. Those numbers will result in her receiving the attention of college coaches throughout the country. In addition, this year Linhart was the recipient of the prestigious Hoffman Award as the best underclassman female athlete at her high school. Linhart is much more than just an athlete. She is a member of the National French Society, carries a 4.3 GPA, scored a 28 on her ACT exam and a 1900 SAT score.

Since her early teens, she has given back to her community through volunteer work with her church, the SPCA and the St. Andrew's Parks and Playgrounds.
