Kids win big with summer reading program

  • Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Children's staff at the Mount Pleasant Regional Library happily report that our 2014 summer reading program is bursting with kids fizzing and booming and reading!

As of July 16, 1,953 children and 205 babies and toddlers at our branch had signed up for Charleston County Library's summer reading program, and a whopping 737 kids had returned to claim their five-hour prizes, which included a South Carolina Summer Reading Medal (complete with a trumpet fanfare award ceremony), a 2014 Readologist certificate and a voucher for free admission to the special RiverDogs baseball game for summer readers on Sunday, Aug. 3.

Prizes for higher levels of reading completion include (for 15 hours) passes to the Carolina Ice Palace or the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry, and a month of free karate lessons from Master's Studio or admission to a Charleston Battery soccer game, and (for 30 hours) admission to the South Carolina Aquarium during the month of August, a kid-sized treat from Sweet CeCe's and (if completed by July 28) a chance to enter into Mount Pleasant Regional's raffle for the grand prize.

Fizz Boom Read ABC is our summer reading program for pre-readers. Caregivers can pick up a special log with fun, age-appropriate activities for babies and young children. Upon completion of the log, caregivers receive a tote bag, and pre-readers receive a board book.

It's not too late for your family to participate in the summer reading program. Children's staff – and our awesome summer reading volunteers – are handing out prizes until Saturday, Aug. 9 (Sunday, Aug. 10 at the Main Library). Just stop by your closest Charleston County Library branch and pick up a reading log. Mount Pleasant Regional is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m..

This summer, Mount Pleasant kids enjoyed fabulous 2014 summer reading events, including visits from the South Carolina Aquarium staff and the Mount Pleasant Police Department with their K-9 companions.

Don't miss out on the fun!
