Trek Bicycle Store of Mount Pleasant and Charleston Bicycle Co. have teamed up with the My City Bikes project to help improve individual and environmental health in Charleston.
Though the action is a simple one, the effects on community health are profound when more people pedal a bike.
My City Bikes is a national campaign creating local solutions to address obesity, heart disease and community wellness with its localized biking apps.
Together with its forward-thinking team of local co-sponsors, My City Bikes has taken action for the health of the Charleston community by creating the Charleston Bikes app as a resource for local cyclists and a tool to support the movement for a more bike-friendly Charleston.
More than half of Charleston residents are at an unhealthy weight, and heart disease is the second leading cause of death in the county. Biking is a simple, affordable activity that can help turn these trends around, but accessibility in Charleston is an issue. Although Charleston has been labeled a “bike-friendly city” there is still much work to do to fulfill the city council's 2008 commitment to build “complete streets” and provide a truly safe, efficient network of bike lanes and shared-use paths to facilitate cyclists.
Each localized My City Bikes app costs $7,000-$12,000 to build. Local co-sponsors contribute between $400-$2,500 toward their city's resource, with the remaining costs being covered by the My City Bikes program, individual sponsors and volunteer programmers.
Trek Bicycle Store of Mount Pleasant and Charleston Bicycle Co. joined My City Bikes to establish the “Charleston Bikes” app which is now available on the iTunes and Google Play app stores.
The free Charleston Bikes app for Apple and Android provides a single place that beginner cyclists can go anytime, anywhere to find road, mountain, recreational and commuter biking in the Charleston area.
