Police Blotter – Phone scam

  • Monday, July 28, 2014

Urgent – beware.

Local residents are receiving phone calls from a person saying they are Lt. Todd Owens of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office with a badge number of 7436. The caller tells the victim he has a warrant for their arrest because he or she missed traffic court. He then says a traffic camera caught the victim running a red light. But when asked where the red light violation happened, the caller does not say. He does say it can be resolved by purchasing a Green Dot pre-paid card for $1,500. This is said to cover $750 for the ticket and $750 for rescheduling the court date.

This is a scam. Police offices do not try to collect money over the phone for any reason.
