Gaia Fit holds fitness challenge to benefit nonprofit

  • Monday, July 28, 2014

Local health business Gaia Fit held a fundraiser on Saturday, July 12, at Smythe Park on Daniel Island to raise funds in assistance for bringing the national nonprofit Girls on the Run to Charleston. Participants formed teams of four and competed in fitness challenges for the chance to win prizes from local businesses. To participate, a donation was made towards the start up of Girls on the Run Charleston.

Gaia Fit founder Mary Patterson is a part of a steering committee of local women committed to bringing the national nonprofit to the Charleston area. In order to receive approval from Girls on the Run International for a local chapter, the committee must complete a lengthy application process, including a business plan, county research and fundraising. The fitness event helped the committee exceed its first fundraising tier of $1,500.

Girls on the Run is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. They inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running.

After the completion and approval of the application process, Girls on the Run Charleston will begin to work in Berkeley and Charleston Counties at the start of the 2015 school year. They will start in two schools, working with third- through fifth-grade girls and will slowly grow outward into the counties the years to follow.
