Wando and Bishop England are set to collide in the marquee game of the 44th annual Sertoma Football Classic Aug. 22 at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
The Warriors and Bishops will play for two quarters in the finale of the two-day jamboree that serves as the unofficial kickoff of high school football in the Lowcountry. This year's edition features 24 teams split through Aug. 21-22. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with kickoff at 5 p.m. both days. Tickets are $12.
Wando and Bishop England last met at Sertoma in 2011 with the Warriors taking a 15-7 win. High School Sports Report's early preseason predictions rank Bishop England No. 13 in Class AA and Wando outside the AAAA top 20.
Academic Magnet and Stall open the Aug. 22 day-two slate. Palmetto Christian and Garrett will follow, in the first glimpse of Eagles football without former head coach Jim Daniel, who stepped down this summer. Burke and First Baptist are scheduled for game three, then Pinewood and North Charleston, and Northwood and Military Magnet.
Porter-Gaud and Lincoln kick off this year's event on Thursday. Baptist Hill and Cane Bay will take the field after, followed by Hanahan and No. 6 ranked Summerville. Green Wave head coach John McKissick has fielded a team in Sertoma every year since it began in 1970.
West Ashley and No. 4 Goose Creek close out day one with Gators senior quarterback Pedro Manigault making his first start against his former team. Manigualt transferred from West Ashley to Goose Creek this offseason, marking the second time in five years a highly touted Wildcats upperclassman has made the switch.
“We're excited about the schedule,” Sertoma Classic chairman Danny Gilbert said. “We're excited about our sponsors and we're excited about what this money goes for.”
The Sertoma Classic is sponsored by C.T. Lowndes and Company Insurance for the fourth straight year. The event has raised close to $4 million for local charities. Each school's athletic department also receives close to $1,000 for participating and each cheerleader receives $1 per ticket sold.
