Smith and Verkaik to wed

Mr. and Mrs. James P. Verkaik of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Christin Michelle Verkaik, to Eben William Smith.

Christin is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Verkaik of Loon Lake, Washington, and the late Dr. Allen M. Johnstone of Morganton, North Carolina, and the late Violet N. Johnstone of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Christin graduated from Wando High School in 2003 and received a BFA in Graphic Design in 2009 from the University of South Carolina. She is currently working as a freelance graphic designer.

Eben is the son of Mrs. Lori A. Smith and the late Mr. William C. Smith of Bradley, Maine.

He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin L. Smith of Charleston, Maine, and Mrs. Marilyn P. Hannigan and the late Mr. Wayne A. Hannigan of Ludlow, Maine. Eben graduated from Old Town High School, Old Town, Maine, in 2002.

He has served almost 10 years in the U.S. Navy, both as an electrician on the nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Olympia (SSN-717), and as an instructor at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command.

The two will be wed on Aug. 24, 2014, at Camp Roosevelt in Eddington, Maine.
