The truth about cats and dogs is at your local library

  • Friday, August 1, 2014

I dropped a fiction book recently and it opened at the back to a recipe for Tuna Tidbits.

“Oh,” I said, “this book has recipes!” I turned back a page and saw a recipe for Chick ‘N' Biscuits.

That might not be bad, I thought. Then I saw a recipe for Crispy Liver Morsels. Ewww.

But I gamely turned to the prior page for more recipes and read “Homemade Treats for Your Cat.” I was no longer so grossed out by the Crispy Liver Morsels. (The book, by the way, was a large-print copy of “Family Affair” by Debbie Macomber.)

I'm sure most of you have cats, dogs or other pets that you love just as much as I love Tiki. Or maybe you're thinking about getting a pet for the first time.

The library can help.

During August, visit our display about pet care.

You will find books such as “Cat Sense: How the New Feline Science Can Make You a Better Friend to Your Pet” by John Bradshaw, “Training for Both Ends of the Leash: A Guide to Cooperation Training for You and Your Dog” by Kate Perry, or “Hamsters, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, Ferrets, Mice, and Rats: How to Choose and Care for a Small Mammal” by Laura S. Jeffrey.

We'll also be giving away two books about pet care, “101 Essential Tips: Training Your Dog” and “101 Essential Tips: Caring for Your Cat,” both published by DK. Just visit the display from Aug. 1-30 and fill in an entry form. There will be two separate drawings. You may enter both drawings (one entry per day, please), but you can only win one of the books. Good luck!
