Consider becoming a foster parent

  • Monday, August 4, 2014

Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY) of South Carolina envisions the day when every child is part of a loving family and is able to reach his or her greatest potential. Their treatment foster care program protects youth who are unable to stay with their primary family due to abuse, neglect and/or behavioral issues. In South Carolina today, there are more than 4,000 children in the foster care system. A severe lack of foster parents means many of these youths do not have access to a loving home.

For more than 30 years, SAFY has provided culturally diverse treatment programs and an array of collaborative services to meet the needs of children placed in out-of-home care. Their foster youths come from all walks of life, many experiencing trauma ranging from parental alcohol/drug abuse, family violence, and other forms of emotional and physical abuse. SAFY's foster parents play a vital role in offering safety, support, stability and a loving home when the biological family is unable to meet their needs. These foster parents are working couples, grandmothers, grandfathers, career-oriented professionals, married and/or single adults. Some have their own biological children and others have no children at all. They are of different ages, races, income levels, religions, genders and/or backgrounds, but all foster parents share one thing in common – a willingness to make a difference in the life of a child.

SAFY provides a competitive reimbursement rate determined by the individual needs of each youth placed in care. Specialized training and 24/7 support is provided by their professional staff, ensuring our caretakers have the skills needed to be effective foster parents.

When a child is removed from their family, they are changed forever. Each day, these youths deal with disappointments and hardships most cannot begin to imagine. Every positive experience they have provides an opportunity to feel valued and secure, and every act of kindness lets them know they deserve to be cared for.
