The Charleston RiverDogs and CARTA are teaming up with local fans to make a run at history this month.

Immediately following the final out of the RiverDogs’ Aug. 16 contest against the Rome Braves, a group of guest conductors will lead the crowd in “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on the kazoo, hoping to set a new Guinness World Record for largest kazoo ensemble.

During the game, fans will receive a wristband and kazoo courtesy of Kazoobie Kazoos, based in Beaufort, South Carolina. The current world record stands at 5,190, set in March 2011 in London.

“We want to do something that is out-of-the-box, that will put Charleston in the spotlight and is worthy of a RiverDogs promotion,” CARTA marketing director Michelle Emerson said. “This kazoo promotion is no live prostate exam, but it will do.”

The world-record attempt is part of CARTA night at Riley Park. CARTA board chairman Elliot Summey will throw out the game’s first pitch, while CARTA and Veolia Transportation employees will be featured throughout the night.

“CARTA is a great public service that is becoming even more important as the Lowcountry continues to grow,” RiverDogs general manager Dave Echols said. “They’re a great partner, and we hope that we’ll be able to put Charleston in record books.

“Kazoos are as American as baseball.”

The world-record attempt is one of several promotions the RiverDogs and CARTA have partnered on lately. Several CARTA buses are wrapped in sports themes and some have been visited by the RiverDogs mascot, Charlie T. RiverDog. CARTA has also recently been awarding RiverDogs tickets through weekly online trivia contests.

The hashtags #CARTAKazoo and #DogsKazoo have been created for fans to use in the days leading up to the world-record attempt.
