U.S. Forest Service invites public to attend recreation meeting

  • Wednesday, August 13, 2014

The U.S. Forest Service is inviting people and organizations interested in the future of the Francis Marion National Forest (Francis Marion) to attend a public meeting and open house focused on recreation from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16. This meeting, located at the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center, Highway 17 N, Awendaw, South Carolina, is part of a series of Community Conversations encouraging public involvement in the Francis Marion plan revision process.

“Our main goal is to continue to improve every visitor’s recreation experience, but we can’t do that without help,” said Rick Lint, forest supervisor for the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests. “We welcome and will consider ideas from everyone as to how best to manage recreation on the Francis Marion.”

This interactive meeting will have activities for adults as well as children. Participants will learn and share information about wilderness, wild and scenic rivers, recreation opportunities, cultural/historic awareness and connecting people to nature. An open house will follow with light refreshments from noon to 1 p.m. when Smokey Bear will celebrate his 70th birthday. Participants will be invited to sign up for a Sept. 13 field trip on the Francis Marion.

“Recreation is one of the most important aspects of our national forests,” said Jannah Dupre, deputy director for the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center. “The Francis Marion offers an array of opportunities that connect families and individuals to nature.”

Registration is not required but suggested. To register, please call 803-561-4000 or email fmplanrevision@fs.fed.us. The Nature Conservancy, the Coastal Conservation League and the SEWEE Association will provide light refreshments.

The Francis Marion National Forest is one of the first national forests to revise its forest plan under the new 2012 Forest Service planning rule.
