MPPD begins Operation Safe Start

  • Wednesday, August 13, 2014

With school starting back Aug. 18, the Mount Pleasant Police Department will begin Operation Safe Start. “The start of school is always a busy time. People are distracted with new routines and different traffic patterns,” says Inspector Chip Googe. “We want to make school opening a safe event for our children and for motorists.”

The Mount Pleasant Police Department is asking that drivers use caution when driving through school zones, around bus stops and within the schools themselves. The Traffic Bureau will be utilized to enforce the traffic laws within these areas.

Officers will be posted around area schools to monitor both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. There will also be officers on patrol watching school buses to make sure people are complying with the Stopped School Bus law. “On two-lane roads, motorists in both directions must stop for a school bus with flashing amber/red lights,” says Inspector Googe. “On roadways with four or more lanes, motorists approaching a school bus do not have to stop, but motorists traveling in the same direction do.”

Wando High School also has a new traffic pattern for this school year. You can find it on Wando’s website under the “For Parents and Students” section in the Transportation Information link. The Mount Pleasant Police Department has also posted this information on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mountpleasantpd and on Twitter under the username @mountpleasantpd
