The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club (ECBRC) will once again host their annual Oktoberfest 5K run and walk, Thursday, Oct. 9, starting 6 p.m.
This evening run supports both the club's fundraising efforts to give bikes to Toys for Tots at Christmas time and Rotary Happy Feet which provides shoes to East Cooper children in need.
The 5K race will be held at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. It will be a certified 5K course that runs through the area of Patriots Point. An Oktoberfest party with an authentic German band, The German Connection Band, and a Bavarian beer garden will be held from 6 to 9 p.m.
ECBRC will team up with the local Marine Reserves unit again this year in their annual Toys for Tots bike drive. In the past, these bikes were purchased through ECBRC member donations only. A small club of 50, ECBRC has donated more than 2,000 bikes since this initiative began. On top of what the club raises this year, proceeds from the Oktoberfest 5K run and walk will be used to support this cause to raise even more money to buy bikes for children here in the Lowcountry.
In addition to Toys for Tots, the club sponsors the Happy Feet Rotary Program by providing funds for many Lowcountry school-age children to purchase a pair of shoes at no cost to the child. Some of the children depend on this program each year to fill the need.
Race fees are $25 prior to Oct. 1, $30 after Oct. 1 and tickets are $35 the day of the race.
For an additional $10, guests can get a basic cotton T-shirt or $15 for performance T-shirt. Fees include beer and food at the post-race party.
There will be awards given for best overall and age groups (three deep male/female) The age groups are: 17 and under, 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60 and over.
