Marquel Coaxum, a former police officer with seven years of experience with the Town of Mount Pleasant Police Department, recently joined the Mount Pleasant Communications Office in the role of multimedia coordinator. A reservist with the 315th Airlift Wing, Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, Staff Sgt. Coaxum brings to the communications office four years of experience in public affairs and photojournalism.
“This is a perfect fit,” commented Communications Officer Martine Wolfe-Miller. “Marquel's in-depth knowledge of the town's operations combined with his experience as a public affairs specialist with the Air Force is a winning combination. He will bring a visual identity to the town that will further our public engagement outreach initiatives. People are thriving on web imagery and the emotional connections that it generates. The new multimedia coordinator will help us create content that resonates in today's visual culture.”
Among the varied multimedia initiatives planned this year, the communications office is launching “A Day in the Life” visual narrative.
“We will take our viewers on visual journeys in the back of sanitation trucks, on ride-along with the police department or in responding fire trucks,” added Wolfe-Miller. “We will share a day in the life of a laborer, a volunteer coach, a firefighter, a police officer and many other public servants. Public service matters and we want to share our story and show the familiar in a new light.”
“I am delighted to join the communications office,” said Coaxum. “The skills I have acquired with the police department will help me transition to this new position.”
Coaxum earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies at the College of Charleston.
He attended the Airman Leadership School, JB Charleston in 2011. He recently completed a public affairs specialist course at the U.S. Defense Information School in Fort George Meade, Maryland.
He served on a multimedia production team that earned the 315th Airlift Wing a Telly Award in 2012 for the “Troop Talk Extreme C-17 Factor” video.
Coaxum lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife Caitlin and young son Paxton.
