Wando senior Matthew Pegram committed to the Wofford College Terriers Sunday.

The 6-foot-10 center helped Wando to its first Class AAAA basketball state championship last season, averaging a double-double through 29 games. In the state title game against Hillcrest, Pegram posted nine points, 15 rebounds and four blocks.

“I want to start something great at Wofford,” Pegram said. “They’ve been recruiting me since 10th grade and are a proven winning team. I woke up on Saturday and had this feeling that Wofford was home.”

Wando visits Wofford each summer for the Mike Young basketball camp. Wando head coach David Eaton played at Wofford from 2000-04, as did Pegram’s great uncle, Willie Pegram who ranks seventh all-time in scoring for the Terriers.

Pegram would be the third player from Wando to join Wofford basketball in four years, as 2011 Wando graduate John Swinton will be a junior this season and 2012 graduate Eric Wagenlander will be a sophomore.

“Eric and I are extremely close friends,” Pegram said. “It definitely helped my decision to know that I’ll have good friends help me through the transition from high school to college.

“I wanted to commit before the season started and now I don’t have any pressure going into the season and I can focus on helping our team win another state championship.”

Wofford won 20 games and the Southern Conference tournament last season, earning its third bid to the NCAA tournament in five years.

Ranked as one of the state’s top 2015 prospects, Pegram holds offers from nine schools – eight Division I – including Charleston Southern, Presbyterian, USC Upstate, Appalachian State and High Point.
