  • Tuesday, August 19, 2014

Legare Farms Education Foundation will hold a fun run at the farm on Sept. 13. The Cow Pie Skip is a 5K run with eight-10 farmhand chores along the way. Some of the chores include pumping water from a pitcher pump to water the animals, lassoing the stationary steer, milking the simulated cow and carrying eggs around the hen house.

The run will be through the pastures of Legare Farms, ending at the playground picnic area where an after party will be held. There party will feature Legare Farms hamburgers and barbeque sandwiches as well as beer and wine. A vegetarian burger will also be offered. Music will be provided. Runners will receive a commemorative event T-shirt and a meal as part of their registration. Registration is $50 for everyone 12 and up. Those under 12 years old can run for free, but would have to purchase a T-shirt if wanted. The party is included in the registration fee and free to non-runners.

“We want to offer a fun run by a local farm, that's not going anywhere,” said Helen Legare-Floyd, one of the farm's operators. “We've been here since 1725 and will be here to see this race through.” The race will go on rain or shine.

The proceeds of the race will go to the Education Foundation, Legare Farms nonprofit foundation. The goal of the foundation is to educate the people of the Lowcountry on the importance of agriculture in the past, present and future while providing a hands-on farm experience.
