The Awendaw Blue Crab Fest will take place Oct. 4. PROVIDED

If you love blue crabs, you can find them in abundance at the Awendaw Blue Crab Festival. This event is a favorite of not just the locals, but those who travel far and wide to attend.

The Town of Awendaw is preparing for its 19th annual Blue Crab Festival. The festival will be held, Oct. 4 from noon to 5 p.m. at Camp Sewee, off of Doar Road.

Attendees can purchase all the blue crab they can eat, prepared in a variety of different ways. Enjoy steamed crabs by the bucket, or try the succulent fried crabs at the festival. There will also be fried fish, chicken drumettes, Frogmore stew, hot dogs and hamburgers. Organizers guarantee you won't leave hungry. Various local vendors will have handmade crafts on display. Also other delicious seafood, and other food options will be available. The event also features live music, arts and craft, and exhibits. T-shirts from this year and years past will also be on sale.

Organizers say the festival is a way to celebrate the Town of Awendaw. In addition, nonprofit Carolina Studios will be on hand mixing up your recordings.

When it was started in 1995, 60 people picked through 10 bushels of crabs. The festival was held annually except for 2004, when it was canceled because of tropical storm warnings. In 2007, about 5,000 people attended. The festival was brought back by popular demand in 2011.

Tickets are $2 per person at the entry gate. For more information, contact the Town of Awendaw Town Hall at 843-928-3100 or email awendaw@tds.net.
