Coastal Christian suffered a 50-8 loss to Laurens Academy in its season opener Friday in Laurens.

Laurens Academy junior quarterback Ryan Holmes threw for 213 yards and five touchdowns in the first half to lead the Crusaders to a 50-8 halftime lead. The teams played with a running clock through a shortened second half.

Coastal (0-1) struggled from the first play from scrimmage, snapping the ball over quarterback Robert Crates and into the end zone for a safety. Laurens Academy scored in two plays on the ensuing drive to take an 8-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

Holmes led the Crusaders on four consecutive scoring drives, passing for touchdowns on each. The Crusaders defense fell on a fumble in the Cougars end zone to take 42-0 lead with more than nine minutes to play in the second quarter.

Coastal broke the shutout with 14 seconds to play in the half with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Crates to Ashton Wood. Crates added the two-point conversion himself.

Coastal is back on the road Friday at Charleston Collegiate. The Cougars return home Sept. 5 to host Cathedral Academy.
