Communities In Schools (CIS) of the Charleston area, a drop-out prevention organization that serves more than 13,300 students in 28 Title I schools, is proud to partner with Charleston Krav Maga and Mount Pleasant Fleet Feet Sports for self-defense training on Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Danny Jones Recreation Center in North Charleston. Proceeds will benefit “Support the Girls.” WWE diva Alicia Fox will guest co-host the class.
The “Support the Girls” initiative was formed by Fleet Feet owners Amy and Chris Minkel in 2013 upon learning that many female students in Charleston who struggle with a high body mass index avoid exercise because they don't own a proper sports bra and are embarrassed performing physical activity in front of male classmates.
Fleet Feet has teamed up with Charleston County Schools' Wellness Committee and MUSC Lean Team, as well as Moving Comfort, to provide free high-quality, high-support sports bras for female ROTC students in need.
The class will cost $15 and is limited to 125 people. Proceeds will go to purchase sports bras for students at CIS's schools. Fleet Feet will also be there to talk about their bra fittings and injury prevention classes.
Matt Robinson, owner of Charleston Krav Maga, will be teaching the class. He is the first worldwide certified Krav Maga instructor in South Carolina.
With more than 20 years of experience in martial arts and combat styles, Robinson holds a third-degree black belt in the United Fighting Arts/Chun Kuk Do Karate system. His studio, founded in 2004, is the area's largest self-defense and martial arts facility with the honor of being the only Krav Maga Worldwide Studio in South Carolina and the only Fit to Fight facility in the Lowcountry.
