PGA Tour pro John Daly’s longtime motto of “grip it and rip it” has changed slightly.
The two-time major champion is on a new tour this year to convince his loyal fans to “grip it and sip it.”
Daly is making his rounds through South Carolina this week to introduce John Daly Cocktails to the Palmetto State. Wednesday he stopped by the driving range of Patriots Point Links to give fans a taste of his sweet tea, lemonade and vodka concoction.
“I kept seeing my name on menus ‘The John Daly,’” he said. “I’ve always known what the John Daly is because I kind of started it on the West Coast in about ’94. But I think it’s time to show everybody else.”
Daly says he’s been sober for six years, so he’s using the promotional tour and his fans as a focus group to test his drinks. The John Daly Cocktails are available in sweet tea, peach tea and raspberry tea flavors. In eight months, the brand has spread throughout 15 states with its sights now set on expansion into the Southeast.
“South Carolina is our guy,” said Brian Beatty, CEO of GIASI, the distributor of John Daly Cocktails. “John is the epitome of the Myrtle Beach culture and the fun loving, golfing spirit that it exudes.”
With his golf shop and golf course, Wicked Stick, already located in Myrtle Beach, Daly says he’s especially excited about expanding his cocktail lineup into South Carolina.
A string of injuries, surgeries and rehab over the better part of the past decade has allotted him more time to build his product’s brand off the course, but Daly says he’s not yet thinking about retirement and sees the cocktails as more of a hobby until he does decide to hang up his clubs.
“More retirement money, hopefully,” he joked.
