VFW Post 3137 on the Isle of Palms is having their 15th annual Gene Johnson Golf Tournament at 10 a.m., Sept. 14, at Wild Dunes Harbor course. The cost is $80 per person ($320 per team) with a shotgun format; sign in at 9 a.m., with drinks on the course and a barbecue dinner afterwards at the VFW. Hole sponsorships are for sale and organizers are accepting donations. This is a yearly event to support the VFW and its endeavors.
The Isle of Palms VFW Post 3137 started out near Breach Inlet in humble surroundings. It was started at the old Texaco station at the end of Isle of Palms and the entrance to Sullivan's Island better known as Breach Inlet. Through generous donations and hard work, the VFW now resides at an oceanfront address.
The Gene Johnson VFW Post 317 Memorial Golf Tournament celebrates the life of one of the VFW's past commanders and a longtime resident of the island.
All active-duty personnel, whether they have been in a war zone or not, are invited to come. The view is unbeatable, but the comradeship is what matters to many. To be able to not worry about being judged for what or where you have been, to listen and understand, is worth so much more to both young and old servicemen and women.
You can drop by the VFW, open 4-10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and noon to 10 p.m., Friday through Sunday) or call 843-822-7794 to register, sponsor or donate.
