Charleston Collegiate scored 22 unanswered points to take a 40-12 win over Coastal Christian on Friday night on John’s Island.
Coastal (0-2) cut Charleston Collegiate’s lead down to 18-12 midway through the third quarter with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Robert Crates to Ashton Wood.
Malik Baqi answered for Charleston Collegiate (1-0) less than two minutes into the ensuing drive with a 75-yard touchdown run that sparked a dominant finish for the Sundevils.
Baqi finished with a game-high 224 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries.
Trailing 12-0 early in the second quarter, Crates broke through for a 1-yard touchdown run to send the Cougars into halftime down one score.
The freshman quarterback was 15-of-33 on the night, passing for 125 yards and a touchdown. Rodney Prioleau caught five passes for 41 yards, and Will Hollingsworth added another four for 43 yards.
Coastal returns to Mount Pleasant Friday to host Cathedral Academy in the Cougars’ home opener.
