Despite the Moultrie News being unable to initially confirm the arrival of Nordstrom Rack in Mount Pleasant, the newspaper has learned first hand that the store will open at Bowman Place in the fall of 2015.
In early June rumors swirled about the store's possible opening, but Naomi Tobis of Nordstrom Corporate Affairs told the Moultrie News that they were looking at potential locations for additional Rack stores in South Carolina but had no deal to share at this time.
This morning she informed the Moultrie News that the approximately 34,500-square-foot store is officially scheduled to open at Bowman Place which is owned and managed by Charleston based Grove Property Fund LLC.
The new Rack store will be a part of a total renovation of the former Kmart center and will be located just off Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and I-526.
After 35 years, Kmart closed its doors earlier this year.
Design plans submitted to the Town of Mount Pleasant reveal a new facade and a restructuring of the shopping center's five parcels.
Because the developer is not making more than 50-percent improvement, the project will not go through traditional planning boards and commissions.
In addition, the plan calls for extensive landscaping improvements and lighting.
“We have been looking for more opportunities to serve customers in South Carolina and we're excited to bring a Nordstrom Rack closer to home for customers in Mount Pleasant,” said Geevy Thomas, president of Nordstrom Rack. “Bowman Place is an excellent location and we look forward to opening our doors next fall.”
When it opens, it will be the third Rack store in South Carolina. The company is opening their first Rack location at Magnolia Park in Greenville Oct. 3 and will open a second location in Columbia at Harbison Court on Oct. 24.
“With Nordstrom's long track record as one of the nation's top fashion retailers we believe there is no better choice than Nordstrom Rack to co-anchor our new Bowman Place development,” said Donna Patterson, regional property manager for Grove Property Fund LLC.

The site design renderings do not include an indication of tenants of the other three parcels.
Daniel Island-based Grove Property Fund LLC, owners of the 131,000-square-foot shopping center, plan to partially demolish and redesign the center with updated storefronts and landscaping, according to the submitted documents.
