One of Charleston's best-known artists has moved to Mount Pleasant.

Jack Thames is now in the small-shops section of the BiLo shopping center just off Mathis Ferry Road. A longtime chronicler of the Lowcountry, his paintings not only feature Lowcountry scenes, but also accurately depict the area's abundant wildlife.

Thames was born in Charleston and began his career in the arts crafting hand-painted neckties. He received a degree in commercial art from the Atlanta Art Institute after returning from service in World War II and soon found work as art director at a major ad agency.

After returning to Charleston with his family in the 1970s, Thames helped found Charleston Magazine and served as the publication's art director. Thames is now retired from commercial art, which allows him to focus more on his paintings.

Thames' shop is located at 708 South Shelmore Blvd., Suite 201, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. A large selection of his works can be seen online at www.charlestonartbythames.com.
