Q: Why do I need to worry about my blood pressure if I feel fine?
Friday, February 20, 2009
Stephen
By Stephen Murk, M.D.

•A:  We have known for some time that high blood pressure (also called hypertension) increases the rate at which arteries in the body “clog-up” or become blocked.  This can eventually lead to heart attacks, strokes and other problems.  High blood pressure is particularly bad when combined with other conditions that also speed up the “clogging” process including smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity.  Unfortunately, high blood pressure rarely causes symptoms, so you may not know it is high unless it is measured.  For that reason, high blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer”.

You are more likely to develop high blood pressure if you are overweight, drink too much alcohol or eat to much salt.  In addition, high blood pressure is more common with age, in African-Americans, and in those who have other family members with hypertension.
