The County has already begun accepting applications. Applicants must be between the ages of 16-21 to participate in the program.

“This is a great opportunity for youth in our county to gain meaningful and rewarding work experience while also learning about their local government,” said Andrea Umbreit, of the Charleston County Grants Administration Department, who coordinates the CALHAK program. “Participants will be exposed to a variety of career opportunities and county staff who are excited to share their expertise and knowledge.”

Based upon their skills, work history and interests, qualified candidates will be matched with positions available in various county departments. In the past, participants have worked in the County’s Public Library System; Administrator and Deputy Administrators’ offices; Human Resources Department; Safety and Risk Management Department; Probate Court; Public Works Department; Board of Elections & Voter Registration; and the Judicial Center Complex.

Participants will typically work 20 hours per week, and will be paid $7 an hour.

 Charleston County staff will screen all applicants in advance. The applicants will also undergo intensive interview training and professional behavior training prior to being chosen for the program.
