Eggs from Bi-Lo not affected by national recall
Wednesday, August 25, 2010

BI-LO today reassured customers that its eggs are perfectly safe to eat, as the company remains unaffected by the nationwide Food and Drug Administration recall.  Both the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have linked the outbreak of salmonella specifically to two Iowa egg producers that have never sold eggs to BI-LO: Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg.

BI-LO works with local vendor L&R Farms in Georgia to supply all Southern Home® and Clear Value® eggs to shoppers.  L&R Farms has a full-time U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector on-site that works to ensure all the eggs are in compliance with government regulations.  As an added precaution, all hens located at L&R Farms are vaccinated against salmonella.

In addition to the store brand eggs available at BI-LO, the company also supplies eggs from Eggland’s Best® of Jefferson, Pa.; Land O Lakes® of Fontana, Calif.; Born Free® of Waterton, Pa.; and Davidson’s Pasteurized Eggs® of Lansing, Ill., all of whom have confirmed that their products are safe to eat and have never purchased eggs from the suppliers that are part of the national recall.

All of BI-LO’s vendors comply with FDA regulations, including the most recent safety rules issued on   July 9.  The FDA's new rules cover refrigeration of stored and transported eggs, pasteurization and cleanliness, and they require a written egg-associated Salmonella prevention plan.

“Food safety is of paramount importance to BI-LO, and we are committed to the highest quality standards,” said Mark Van Ostenbridge, director of food protection and safety with BI-LO.  “At BI-LO, we maintain a strict quality-control program to ensure that all products exceed our high standards so that our customers can continue to have confidence in the quality of everything available at our stores.”
