Shake it at the Shrimp Shack on Wednesday
Wednesday, December 01, 2010
By Stu Johnson

You can always make a safe bet that Iacofano's will have great food, great service and great live music. This week is no exception.

On Wednesday, Dec. 1, it's Keith Bruce. You can hear great guitar and vocals from this very talented and friendly seasoned veteran of the southern music scene. On Thursday, Dec. 2, it's the Louie D. Duo. Composed of sax master Louis Dixson and Jesse Anderson on bass and guitar, these guys create a full and rythmic sound that it usually takes a full band to create. On Friday, Dec. 3, Control Freak bring their hard rockin' extravaganza. On Saturday, Dec. 4, it's the Gettlefingers. The husband and wife duo of Brad and Tina Gettlefinger are not only entertaining and fun but experienced classicly trained musicians. I won't be able to make this show, but I usually try to see them whenever they play on this side of town.

This week at BuddyRoe's Shrimp Shack, Wednesday, Dec. 1, it's Robert Hutto & Michael Gilbert. Hutto is one of the best singer/songwriters I've ever heard as well as having a devotion to music that is rare these days. One night only so make sure you get out and see them. Thursday - Saturday it's Ronnie Johnson and Chris Clifton. Johnson is (along with being the owner of "The Shack") quite the performer, singer/songwriter himself and with the expert level guitar slinging of Clifton, this is a duo steeped in talent. For your Sunday evening entertainment, what could be better than a tried and true mainstay of the local scene then the amazing Carroll Brown.

Then there is the Awendaw Green Festival going on this weekend. In all, over 150 performers amidst 66 unique acts will play over the two days. Two Center Stages will rotate 45-minute sets, allowing continuous music from noon to 10 p.m. each day. The Dance Stage will highlight an assortment of grooving and growing acts. A particularly exciting development is the creation of the Singer/Songwriter Stage at the stage normally used for Barn Jams.

Featuring an 'in-the-round' performance style, this stage will offer an intimate level of connectivity amongst individual performers and their audience. Tickets for the Awendaw Green Music Festival are $15/day or $25 for a weekend pass and students $10/day or $20/weekend pass, available at the gate. Food and drink will be reasonably priced and provided by the Seewee Restaurant Grill on site and Palmetto Brewery. Please, no coolers.

Proceeds from the Awendaw Green Music Festival will benefit the Wando High School Band Program, the American Red Cross, Toys for Tots and other local causes.

Camping is available and encouraged in close offsite proximity to the festival grounds. Food will be available at the camping location and a bonfire pit will serve as the communal grounds for late night revelry. Camping tickets are $20<0x00A0>car or $40 RVs [no hook ups].

As for me, I just got back from a trip to Cleveland. I spent most of Saturday at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What fun it was! Look for a detailed account of my trip in an upcoming column.

Now back at home, I'm ready to play! Allnightkungfu ( my buddy Jerry and I) will be at Wine Awhile this Friday, Dec. 3 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.-ish . Located at Highway 17N and 41(in the Station 41 plaza), Wine Awhile is a continuous wine tasting. We always enjoy playing there and hanging out with the staff and patrons while sipping on wine as well as their assortment of high gravity beers. Come on out and say hello.

If you don't catch us there, we'll be appearing at the recently re-opened Village Tavern, Wednesday, Dec. 8. We are excited to be back there as we were in the first band to play there when it originally opened in 2001. It was also the first show that we played together.

We are excited about the great changes and improvements that new owners John Morlan and David Warren have made to the place. But why take my word for it, check it out for yourself. Next Wednesday would be a good night to do that…just sayin'.

Until next time, be nice to each other and support live music.
