Hot enough for ya'? Sure is for me. Long days of working in this weather can sure wear you out. After a long week you'll want to go find a place with cold beers and hot music. If you throw in some great barbecue, well, you might be describing this Lowcountry redneck's idea of Heaven!
While surfing the web to research this week's column, I think I may have found three nights of Heaven at Home Team BBQ on Sullivan's Island. They have three great bands that are as talented as they are different from each other, yet I could see the fans of each band digging the other two. That kind of stuff doesn't happen by accident, it's the work of Tony Mckie, the evil mastermind behind the booking at Home Team BBQ.
On Thursday (it's o.k.-I'm giving you permission to start your weekend early), it's Ryan Bonner & Dearly Beloved. Bonner has a way of creating a comfortable space with his songs. While there are comparisons to Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) and Ryan Adams, Bonner certainly has his own sounds. While most people would classify his sound as Indie/folk/rock his music often defies classification. Check him out @ www.myspace.com/ryanbonnermusic
Friday night it's the Graham Whorley Band. Whorley began music at the tender age of 5, learning the Suzuki method of piano. At the age of 11 he found his calling with the guitar. Graham was forming bands and playing shows in venues he wasn't even old enough to be in by the time he was 14. After talking to his sister over a pay phone at the age of 18, standing in the freezing snow and sleeping in his car, Graham decided to make the move away from his roots of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to head for Charleston, South Carolina. Forming the GWB shortly after moving here, he has become a mainstay of the local music scene. Roots rock, music with jazz colorings, in a giant psychedelic swirl, is my best description. Enthralling, yet toe tapping. Check it out at www.myspace.com/thegrahamwhorleyband<0x00A0>
On Saturday it's The Groovetones. I'll start out by saying that if you have ever taken my advice to see a band, this would be the one to see. This 3pc straddles the blues, boogie rock road better than most. Bassist Tony Reyes vocals are very distinctive, with a hint of Louie Prima influence. Bill Luebke's guitar sound will have other guitarists in the place thinking " how does he get that amazing tone". I have had the pleasure of mixing their sound and I think they may be one of the best bands I've ever seen. So I'm not going to send you to their website. You should just go see this band!
Scrolling through their website (they have listings all the way 'til 9/11/10), I see it's going to be one hot summer with some of my personal favorites: Nashville, Tennessee's Mellow Down Easy, local favorites Millhouse, Memphis, Tennessee's Delta Highway, Local Godfather of the Blues Shrimp City Slim, Alt Country/ Folk artist Mac Leapheart….it goes on and on. Look for an interview in this column in early July with Charlie Sayles and the Disciples featured guitarist Tony Fazio. They will be at Home Team BBQ on July 13. Go check out the impressive schedule for both Home Team BBQ locations (they have one in the West Ashley area as well) at www.hometeambbq.com
Well, it's back out into the heat for me. I have been working in my neighbor's garden early in the mornings. One hour a day of weeding in return for delicious, organically grown vegetables is quite a deal and I couldn't pass it up. If you (like me ) have to get out in the heat, remember to keep yourself hydrated. And make sure to cool down in the evening with some great live music at one of the many places in the East Cooper Area that offer it.
Until next week, support live music and be nice to each other.
