Fowler heading to the area
Wednesday, July 15, 2009
By Stu Johnson

With the busy schedule that I keep, it’s sometimes hard to find time to grab a bite to eat. Last week, I was so busy that I was afraid I was going to pass myself running in or out of the house to get ready for the next job.

Cooking a meal at the house was out of the question.

During one of those moments when I was just out of time, my lovely girlfriend suggested that I try Mozzo, a new deli in the Brookgreen Shopping Center. With one look at the menu she brought home from an earlier trip there, I knew that this was going to be a great dining adventure.

The sandwich that caught my eye was called “Dig The Fig.” Proscuito, caramelized onions, asiago cheese   and fig preserves. I had it panini style on ciabatta bread as the menu suggested. It was the best sandwich I’ve ever had, and if you know me you know that I’ve had quite a few sandwiches in my years.

On subsequent visits, I tried the bagel with smoked salmon, red onion and tomato. As I write this, I am finishing up the “Fat Boy” which is piled high with pastrami, corned beef and finished with Russian dressing, slaw, and American cheese. Mmmm mmmm!

So when you get a chance stop by and say hello to Shannon and his crew. Try some of their great food.

This Thursday night at A Dough Re Mi it’s Blind Pig recording artist, Damon Fowler. Born in the Tampa, Fla. area he’s been playing guitar since he was 12. It wasn’t long before he was playing clubs all around Tampa. Now,  after three CD’s (and a fourth due out any soon) he’s coming through town.

His playing, writing, and vocal ability has brought him many accolades. His latest include Creative Loafing Magazines best guitarist, best lap steel player, and best do bro player all rolled into one tight package. Fowler has been touring the country since November 2004, and has built a dedicated fan base throughout. The current line up consists of Fowler on guitar and vocals, Chuck Riley on bass, and Scott Key on drums.

Part of The Dough’s “Red Hot Blues Weekend” also features Cole Train on Friday and the Wyatt Garey Band on Saturday. Both of these bands feature young but very talented musicians. Cole Train is fronted by Sarah Cole who has captured the interest of blues fans and features Nate Merli on lead guitar. Wyatt Garey has been playing since he was 12 in gospel, blues and rock bands . He has played up and down the east coast.

On Friday night you might want to check out Travis Allison at the Wild Wing Café. He and his talent-packed band will rock your night with great original tunes along with some classic covers.

I am finding it increasingly hard to compile listings for the local music venues. I can go to the Web sites for the places that have them but sometimes the information is out of date. I try to call some of the venues that don’t have a Web site but often there is no one who can give me the information I need.

Venues can send me their listings at the e-mail address below.
