It is imperative that we protect not only ourselves, but those around us.
There is a heavy veil of privacy surrounding those who have been diagnosed with H1N1. Public officials, school officials and those in the know are being tight-lipped about whether or not someone within their organization has the swine flu.
With that in mind we must assume it’s out there and be mindful of our every move.
For starters - keep your hands away from your face and mouth.
Wash your hands as often as possible.
Carry and use antibacterial hand sanitizer often.
And most importantly, if you or your child are sick - stay home.
The vast majority of those who develop flu-like symptoms this fall will have a few miserable days, and nothing more. Stay home and rest. Practice the basics. Drink plenty of fluid. Get plenty of rest. Take dose-appropriate acetaminophen for a fever. Do not go out in public where you might spread the germ.
If you are worried, call your physician first before just going in. You probably don’t have the swine flu but you could become exposed to it by being around others who are sick.
Most people don’t go to the emergency room when they have the flu. So don’t panic if you have flu symptoms.
With regard to school and work, don’t return until after 24 fever-free hours without the aid of medications.
Currently, there is no H1N1 vaccine, but one is expected to be available by October or later, and according to the Center for Disease Control, people under age 25 should get immunized first.
Football season is here
We got a taste of fall with last week’s weather and a taste of football with South Carolina’s favorite college teams taking to the gridiron.
And right here at home we have a phenomenal group of boys who can play some really good football. Our own Wando Warriors, led by new coach Jimmy Noonan, put on quite a show.
Take time this year to support your local high school. Go to a Friday night game. It is good, clean family fun at a reasonable price.
The Warriors play at home at the old Wando Stadium on Mathis Ferry Road.
Games start at 7:30 p.m.
Community support and community spirit go a long way.
