The Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank will perform Friday
Wednesday, September 23, 2009
By Stu Johnson

A Dough Re Mi Pizzeria  offers great pizza, pasta, salads and more. The raised corner stage in the bar has bands playing most Friday and Saturday nights.

This Friday night, Greenville, S.C. native Taylor Moore will play a solo show. Rock and blues with a definite southern edge, he’s quite the guitarist and songwriter.

Check him out at   www.myspace.com/taylormooreguitar.

Every Tuesday night it’s the Lowcountry Blues Club Jam. It starts about 8:30 p.m. and goes for three or four hours with musicians of  all ages jamming with a core band.

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Chris Bauer will be playing solo. Bauer is the singer/ songwriter with the local band Campfield. Incredible voice and cool songs, check out more at www.myspace. com/christopherbaur.

You can check out the upcoming shows at www.adoughremi.com.

Hometeam BBQ on Sullivan’s Island offers up Charleston’s best BBQ and ribs by using traditional methods and processes. Using only fresh ingredients, their sandwiches, salads, tacos and wraps are created with unique approach to BBQ that you can eat everyday.

Their dry rubbed ribs, chicken, and pork shoulders combined with down home, finger lickin’ sides will knock your socks off! They offer large party takeout orders, full service catering and delivery.

Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ is the culmination of Executive Chef Aaron Siegel’s years of knowledge and experience, beginning with a degree from the University of Georgia in 1996 and seasoned by a culinary degree from The Culinary Institute of America in upstate New York.

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, he was employed by Pinion’s and Cache Cache in Aspen, Colorado and as the executive chef at Blossoms Café in downtown Charleston.

He was fortunate to be able to hone his craft under some of today’s leading chefs.

Talent Buyer Tony Mckie brings in the great local, regional and national artist playing a wide variety of genres from blues and rock to alt-country and Americana. See their schedule at www.hometeambbq.com.

This Friday night it’s The Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank. The Alexy brothers grew up in the New Jersey shore town of Somers Point - the town where Bob Dylan hired The Band.

A simple twist of fate brought them to Dylan’s hometown of Duluth, Minnesota where they started the band as a duo in 2005 with a revolving cast of roots musicians helping them celebrate their original songs alongside inspired renditions of Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt and most importantly Woody Guthrie.

I enjoyed the cool folky, hillbilly-esque, songs at   www.myspace.com/hobonephewsofunclefrank.

Saturday night, it’s my old buddy Bruce String-killer, aka Dr. Pick-up.  Part of his 2009 USA tour...a guitar/piano blues summit with pal, the local godfather of the blues, Shrimp City Slim. Energy, enthusiasm, and Continental flair distinguish this Frenchman’s uptown blues.

Check ‘em out online at www.myspace.com/drpickup.

Well, here is the promised Roctoberfest update.

This event is a benefit for the Charleston County Band Instrument Fund featuring over 75 of Charleston’s best bands of all genres and generations.

The grassroots music connecting point, Awendaw Green, is working hard to iron out all the last minute details for this the second year.

“Music programs in schools all across the country are in trouble and clawing for any funding they can get. The local musicians understand this and are lining up in droves to help with this worthy cause,” said Awendaw Green Founder Dr. Eddie White.

“This year, an added feature of the festival is that you can donate an instrument for admission instead of money. That’s what it’s all about, getting the instruments into the hands of these young folks. Hopefully we can be a connecting point for that to happen.”

Find out more at www.awendawgreen.com .

I’ll be at the festival the whole time and will be getting the behind the scenes stories as well as interviews with the over 75 artists performing.

I will also be helping with sound and other parts of the festival as well as performing.

I will be debuting new solo songs from the collection of songs I’m currently recording that’s called “It takes a village to raise an idiot”.

Next week: I’ll be talking to local musicians and get their opinions about the local music scene.

Until then, support live entertainment and be nice to each other.
