The Flag of the United States of America is a symbol that evokes great emotion and pride. Wearing this great symbol has an important protocol associated with it, that you want to do correctly.
Paragraph J of the United States Flag Code states that:
“The American Flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin, being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel, near the heart.”
Knowing how to respect the American Flag or the flag of any country has always been and continues to be a sign of respect for that country and it’s people.
Wearing the Flag
These days, I often see people wearing flag shirts, flag hats, and flag shorts and carrying flag umbrellas. Even if this display was meant to show support for our country, is this in fact, being disrespectful?
So what does the National Flag Code say about respecting the American Flag?
Title 4 - Chapter 1- Sec 8 – Respect for the flag:
Paragraph D begins with “The Flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding or drapery.”
This eliminates the commonly seen hats, T-shirts and all other apparel.
There are many people who may not know what the correct protocol is when it comes to respecting and displaying the flag of the United States.
Understanding flag protocol, in regards to its proper display, is the first step in being able to properly respect it.
