United States Attorney William N. Nettles stated today that Amelia Ackerman, age 55, of Mount Pleasant, was charged in a five-count Indictment with Wire Fraud in violation 18 U.S.C. <0x00A7> 1343. The indictment alleges that from 2006 to 2008, Ackerman, a comptroller at a company in Charleston, embezzled more than $340,000 from her employer by means of interstate wire transfers. U.S. Attorney Nettles stated the maximum penalty that Amelia Ackerman could receive is a fine of $250,000 and/or imprisonment of 5 years.
Nettles stated that the case was investigated by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and that he has assigned the case to Assistant United States Attorney Rhett DeHart of the Charleston office for prosecution.
The United States Attorney stated that all charges in this indictment are merely accusations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
