Mellow Mushroom in Mt. Pleasant has been an official drop site to donate new school supplies for the Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation's "Homegrown Roundup, Back to School Basics."
On Wednesday, Aug. 11, the Mellow will be "truckin'" donated school supplies to Burke High School to hand out to over 1,000 economically disadvantaged students from four Charleston elementary schools.
School supplies ranged from notebooks, pencils, pens to backpacks and calculators.
Hootie and the Blowfish, made up of Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, Darius Rucker, and Jim Sonefeld is one of the most successful music groups of all time, selling over 25 million albums world-wide.
The band believes they have a responsibility to use their celebrity status to help improve the lives of those in need, especially children.
As the name implies, Hootie & the Blowfish's Roundup gathers together their friends in the community to provide essential services and back-to-school supplies. The Roundup provides haircuts, dental exams, eye exams, backpack, shoes, tees and basic school supplies.
Mellow Mushroom-Mount Pleasant shares the belief that the community can really make a difference when working together, and is thrilled to be partnered with the Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation.
