Countdown to Kindergarten helping families prepare for success in school
Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Time for parents of children entering K-5 Kindergarten to Get On The Bus—the Countdown to Kindergarten Bus, that is. This year's kickoff event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27 at North Charleston Elementary School.

Whether parents are looking for vaccination information, vision and hearing screening or other community resources they can find answers at the event. And most importantly, they will have the opportunity to talk to representatives from their child's school district.

Countdown to Kindergarten supports families and children with the transition into kindergarten in the Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester County public school systems.

The program is a partnership of nonprofit organizations, local businesses and community leaders. The program provides information, resources and opportunities to prepare children for kindergarten, and is part of a year-long series of services to families, including parent outreach and school readiness education. It targets populations most at risk for school failure. Studies have shown that parental involvement is one of the largest predictors of school success.

Parents of children entering kindergarten in the fall can sign up at www.tuw.org. Eligible children receive a free backpack and T-shirt.

Countdown to Kindergarten is a collaborative partnership among Trident United Way, Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester County School Districts, First Steps Offices, Head Start, the Mayor's Office for Children Youth and Families, and Children's Museum of the Lowcountry.
