There were three information stations on display where visitors could learn more about education, site development and architecture of the project. All those in attendance were given clipboards and information sheets to give comments and feedback.
Representatives from the school district and those on the architectural design team were on hand to answer questions.
Program Director Rick Holt, of Cumming Corporation, said a main reason for the meeting was to present new options for the main entry of the school, which is an ongoing concern with town residents.
"We're really trying to get feedback to see if they like these options or not," Holt said. "Then we'll decide how to go forward."
Holt mentioned that since a previous information session, the plans have been altered to show some minor roof changes and an altered elevation. He said the planning group hopes to go back to town council next month with its findings from last Thursday night.
Sullivan's Island Elementary School Principal Susan King manned the education table, explaining the layout of classrooms and reasoning for new additions, such as the proposed multipurpose room. That room, which will serve as an auditorium and a gym, will give the school somewhere for P.E. classes, something the old school did not have. "The purpose for tonight is to provide information to the community and to record feedback," King said. "There is so much misinformation out there." She noted that the most common misconception about the school is that it will be too big.
And King said that even though there are folks who oppose the new school, the public meetings have been positive.
"It's nice to be able to provide information," she said. "I've received some very insightful feedback as well. There are people on different sides of the issue, but it's been a positive experience."
