Long before the winter chill sets in, MUSC Children’s Hospital Fund will kick off their 16th annual “Kids Helping Kids” Holiday Card Project.  For the first time, the public will decide who will be the Project’s Card of the Season.

In early June, five pieces of artwork were chosen by The John M. Dunnan Gallery owner and Children’s Hospital Fund Advisory Board member, John Dunnan with his son Mac’s input to be the potential Card of the Season.  Dunnan, who made the suggestion to add a Card of the Season to the 2007 Holiday Card Project, feels this particular project with the Children’s Hospital is a natural fit for him.

"I developed type 1 diabetes when I was 11 years old. I decided then and there that I would take care of myself, live my life to the fullest, and leave the world a better place. Children create art that inspires us all to make the world a better place,” he said.

In its 16th year, the “Kids Helping Kids” Holiday Card Project pairs up local businesses and individuals with MUSC Children’s Hospital patients, siblings of patients and young friends of the Children’s Hospital to make a difference in the lives of the children of the Lowcounty.  Sponsors underwrite the cost of printing so that all money raised from the sale of the cards will go directly to the programs at the MUSC Children’s Hospital. All cards selected for the project will be packaged in multipacks and sold to the public starting Nov. 1. The 2007 distribution locations included area South Carolina Federal Credit Union branches, BB&T locations, First Federal locations, the MUSC Gift Shop, the Bishop England Key Club, Belk stores and the MUSC Children’s Hospital Foundation Office.  All cards will be displayed on the MUSC Children’s Hospital Web site in mid-October.

This year, the five potential Card of the Season artists range in age from 7-12 and have all been touched by the Children’s Hospital in some way.

Voting for the Card of the Season runs through July 31.  There are two ways to vote: view the original artwork with a visit to the College of Charleston Bookstore, located at 160 Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston, or visit the Children’s Hospital Web site at www.musckids.com to view the artwork and cast your vote.  Vote as often as you would like.  The winning card will be announced in early fall and the winning artist will be featured in all media spots for the Holiday Card Project as well as have their artwork featured for the upcoming year as the logo of the project.
