Keeping an eye on Wando graduates after high school

Where do our graduates go after high school? What colleges do they attend?  How do they decide where to apply? These questions are ones which I am often asked by prospective parents.

Based on data from the Class of 2008, 94 percent of our graduates planned to continue their education at either four-year or two-year colleges or universities. Because of the SC lottery scholarships, financial incentives of in-state tuition and sometimes family tradition, more than 50 percent of our graduates decided to attend SC colleges and universities.  The College of Charleston reported that Wando was the number No. 1 high school sending students to them with 85 enrolled as freshmen there. Clemson has 56 Wando graduates in the freshmen class, and USC-Columbia has 70 members of the Wando Class of 2008 enrolled there.

Of the in-state public four year colleges and universities, Clemson is the one which is most selective in its admission standards.  For the past three years, Wando has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 as the high school which has the most students enrolling at Clemson.  Our students are also well-represented in the freshmen classes at The Citadel, Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern, Winthrop, Furman, Art Institute-Charleston, Wofford, SC State and Francis Marion.  We have 136 graduates who decided to attend Trident Technical College, and 13 who elected to attend Tri-County Technical College and hopefully transfer directly to Clemson.

Members of the Wando Class of 2008 are enrolled at colleges and universities across America.  The list includes Alabama, American University, Appalachian, Arizona State, Art Institute-Atlanta, Auburn, Boston University, Brigham Young, Cornell, Culinary Institute of America, Florida, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Johnson C. Smith, Michigan State, Mississippi, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Savannah School of Art and Design, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music, UNC Chapel Hill, US Merchant Marine Academy, Villanova, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and West Virginia among others.

Many of our top students have incredible scholarship offers from multiple institutions including the top Ivy League schools and make final decisions based on the best financial package and their long-term goals and interests.

Wando has become  a feeder school of sorts for the University of Texas at Dallas since in recent years four of our valedictorians and two salutatorians have decided to accept offers to attend school there as Eugene McDermott Scholars. Eugene McDermott was one of the founders of Texas Instruments and his wife established this program. McDermott Scholars receive extensive financial support. Each year approximately 15 high school seniors from across the world are selected for this award. This  incredible scholarship covers, year-round for four years: tuition and fees, an annual book stipend, travel home and back twice a year, a monthly stipend of $1100,  travel and study aboard, and national travel associated with curricular activities.  Criteria for McDermott Scholars include being in the top 2 percent  of the graduating class, an SAT or ACT at/above the 97th percentile, a strong record as a campus leader and  community volunteer, social skills to interact easily with adults and peers, and broad and eclectic interests in science, literature, and the arts.

Students who have excelled in high school academically and demonstrated their academic skills with success in AP and/or Dual Credit college courses along with a strong record of participation and leadership in co-curricular and community activities often get these kinds of fabulous opportunities. The Wando Class of 2008 was awarded more than $12 million in scholarships.
