Just as the Bejing Olympics were ending, 7th and 8th graders in Robin Carter-Greig's class at Trident Academy participated in the first-ever Science Olympics. Students determined five qualities that a scientist would need to be successful, then formed groups and competed in Olympic events designed to test the skills including: accuracy, curiosity, creativeness, team work and communication. Carter-Greig said, "It was a great way to start the year and I would certainly do it again."

Accuracy

Test: Rainbow Lab

Students had to follow a set of instructions to turn three primary colors into the rainbow spectrum of equal volume.  To get it right, they had to be extremely accurate in their measurements.

Curiosity

Test: Curious Questions

Given four live animals (hissing cockroaches, ball python, mealworms, and fish) students came up with scientific questions that could be answered using the scientific method.

Creativeness

Test: Paper Plane Flight Test

Students designed paper airplanes that were judged on distance, accuracy in hitting target, and loft.  Since there were few restrictions, the students needed to think outside the box and crumple paper into a ball (which beat regular airplanes).

Teamwork

Test: Ice Cube Melt

Students brainstormed ways to melt an ice cube the fastest.  Students did everything from breathing on it, to putting it in their shoes, rolling it in sand and melting it on the pavement.

Communication

Test: Poster presentation on Ice Cub Melt Results

While most scientists love the scientific discovery / experimental part of their job - communicating their results is sometimes their least favorite, but still very important.  Here, students summarized/analyzed their data from the Ice Cube Melt in a 'lab report" style poster.
