Captain Magwood's Weekly Shrimping Update - Jellyfish Relent Printer Friendly Version | 0 comment(s)
White shrimp were caught in the “Winds of Fortunes” nets in greater quantities this week, and jellyfish seem to have moved further out to sea – a welcome relief for Magwood and his crew. Magwood had been netting jellyfish in large quantities and neither the effort of throwing them back nor the sting of the their nettles will be missed.
Questions for the Captain:
Q. When is the shrimping season?
A. Shrimp season in South Carolina runs from May to the first of the New Year and is regulated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The first of the season Magwood catches large white row shrimp – these shrimp are used for a cocktail party or stuffing. They are what Magwood calls a “showy” shrimp and the Magwood family likes to joke that they are the “South Carolina Lobster”. In the middle of June Magwood begins catching brown shrimp – a smaller, sweet and tender shrimp that is less expensive. Moving into October Magwood will once again begin catching large white shrimp, the offspring of the spring white shrimp. The season ends in December.
