Sweet Hair Removal is an all-natural waxing alternative

Hair removal has just gotten a little bit sweeter. Sweet 185, located at 476 King St. in downtown Charleston, is the only studio in the area that offers the truly traditional, ancient hand method of sugaring.

Originated in ancient Egypt, sugaring is a method of hair removal via an all-natural blend of sugar, lemon juice and water.

Christina Robertson and Marilyn Roe opened Sweet 185 two years ago and swear by it as a more beneficial alternative to waxing.

In addition to being all-natural and environmentally-friendly, sugaring is more sanitary, less aggressive and depletes the hair follicle.

“After someone is sugared, about four to five weeks later they have 1/3 less hair than they had before,” Robertson said.

Warmed to body temperature, the sugar is never hot and is applied by hand. The sugar also removes hair in the direction in which it grows, meaning no hair breakage and no post-wax stubble.

Not only is the sugar all-natural, but all services offered and products used within Sweet 185 are natural, organic and sourced within the United States. Even the studio’s cleaning products and methods of disposal are environmentally conscious.

“Sugaring has been a long time coming,” Robertson said.

Sweet 185 offers whole-body sugaring, organic skin care and holistic massage.

Another unique service is the studio’s oxygen bar.

With the atmosphere being depleted, we only breathe about 20 percent oxygen, Robertson explained. The oxygen machine gives you about 90 percent oxygen.

Fifteen to 30 minutes at a dollar per minute is all you need to help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, soothe headaches and ease a hangover.

The machines are portable so you can get your oxygen fix while enjoying a massage or facial.

What do people really think of having paid parking on Sullivan’s Island?
All for it, as long as residents get a sticker to put on their car to be exempt from it.

Why is this fair- I have been coming to the beach for years and I support your commercial district.

Sure, considering that the neighboring beaches, Folly and Isle of Palms, have paid parking. Sullivan’s can certainly use the revenue for the many projects they need completed, mainly installing the stormwater drainage.

What do you think of Sullivan's Island's new noise ordinance, restricting noise from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM?
Ridiculous -- what next, we will get fined to just walk in the commercial district?

All for it -- people cannot keep their windows open at night anymore because of the noise.

I am just going to go elsewhere to make some noise!
