South Carolina author publishes a Guide to the Revolutionary War in South Carolina

While living in Eutawville, S.C., Jack Parker became interested in visiting some of the Revolutionary War sites in the area. He soon discovered that available directions to the sites were poor or non-existent. Because of this, the idea for Parker’s “Guide to the Revolutionary War in South Carolina” was born. “I decided to write about the Revolutionary War because South Carolina had more actions than any other state and the Revolutionary War is a forgotten war. Everyone is enamored with the Civil War, but the Revolutionary war is the one that started our great country,” Parker said.

Hot off the press, self-published, the book has 415 detailed pages, including 610 maps, photos and drawings, along with GPS locations for more than 400 sites. His guide carries its readers to the actual places where these historic events unfolded and gives an account of the action at each location.

Parker has done the “boots-on-the-ground” research that he found necessary, which in turn took him down a five-year long journey gathering the information he needed to bring this amazing book to life. Parker said, “It was a challenge, but I loved exploring all the areas of the state that I’ve visited over the years. Looking at the vast swamps and rivers that these men crossed summer and winter made me realize the hardships that the men of the revolution faced to fight for our freedom.”

“It is the first and only publication to catalog of all known sites for an entire state with their locations,” said David Reuwer, publisher of American Revolution Magazine, one of several who have reviewed Parker’s book.

“Jack Parker has related many of the relatively unknown incidents of treachery, ambush and murder, as well as the major confrontations and battles,” said editor Richard M. Huckeby. “Given the book’s scope, it is obvious that this work will be useful not only to the tourist or curiosity seeker, but as a reference work for students, libraries and museums, and as a source for other researchers of Revolutionary War history.”

Parker was born in Pennsylvania, has lived in both historic McClellanville and Eutawville, S.C. After earning a degree in education, he served four years in the Navy as a navigator and executive officer. “After leaving the Navy, I moved to Colorado, where I rode and packed horses into the mountains,” he said.

Parker also spent five years living on a 43-foot yawl in Charleston and taught several people how to live and sail on the water. Parker said, “All these experiences helped me understand, locate and relate the actions of the Revolutionary War.”

Parker’s “Guide to the Revolutionary War in South Carolina” may be ordered from Parker’s Guide, P.O. Box 357, Patrick, South Carolina 29584. The cost is $43.75, which includes sales tax and shipping. If your local bookstore does not carry Parker’s Guide, ask it to contact Parker at parkersguide@shtc.net for details on stocking his guide.
